Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene of a head-on collision involving a wrong-way vehicle on Interstate 55 near East Lake Shore Drive in Springfield early Monday morning.
Illinois State Police Troop 6 said the crash occurred at around 1 a.m in the southbound lane near the Chatham / East Lake Drive exit.
A 42-year-old female resident of Wentzville, Missouri, and a 51-year-old female resident of Girard, Illinois, were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Autopsies were scheduled to take place Monday.
The identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The deaths remain under investigation by the Sangamon County Coroner and the Illinois State Police.
Southbound Interstate 55 was closed for about five hours due to the crash.
