The Springfield City Council voted to renew a contract for Flock automatic license plate reader cameras for $508,000 over the next two years.
Before approval, an amendment was introduced by Ward 2 Alderman Shawn Gregory to codify existing Springfield Police Department policy on the use of Flock’s camera system, as well as to require regular reporting to the Council on the system’s ongoing use.
The amendment was approved with provisions to strengthen internal police policy so long as those changes do not loosen the department’s privacy and accountability standards without the approval of the City Council.
SPD would also be required to notify the City Council of any data breach or policy violation upon discovery.
