U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says that as he leaves public service, he hopes for a reversal in the nation’s increasing divisiveness. The Springfield Democrat made his annual Illinois State Fair appearance on WMAY’s AM Springfield.
Durbin said he hopes people learn to work together again. “We’ve got to be willing to talk to one another again on a human basis,” Durbin told WMAY’s Sam Madonia. “Sure, we’re going to disagree on political issues, but there are things we should agree on when it comes to helping people. I think we need more of that attitude.”
Durbin credited many influences on his career, most notably when he was put in touch with Senator Paul Simon. Durbin said he will stay in Springfield as he begins retirement next year at the end of his term.
