Demolition of the tallest structure at the former Pillsbury Mills site in Springfield has begun.
The group Moving Pillsbury Forward says the 224-foot-tall headhouse is the tallest building ever demolished in Springfield. The organization says the headhouse was built in 1929. Only the 361-foot-high Illinois State Capitol was taller at the time.
Construction of the Plaza Hotel, now the Wyndham, in 1974 made the Pillsbury headhouse the third tallest building in the city. Moving Pillsbury
Forward says nearly all of the building’s materials will be recycled with metal going to a recycling facility and the concrete crushed on-site for future area construction projects.
