Earlier this week, marijuana smokers celebrated 4/20 . . . and this year, NFL players could join in.
Coincidentally, Tuesday the 20th . . . 4/20 . . . was the first day of the league’s random drug testing window. But for the first time, they WON’T test for THC, the chemical found in marijuana.
That’s because a change was made in the last collective bargaining agreement, which ushered in a new drug policy. It’s one of the new things the league agreed to in exchange for the 17-game season.
Under the new rules, players will only be tested for THC during the preseason . . . between the start of training camp and the first preseason game. The threshold for a positive test has also been raised, from 35 nanograms to 150.
The agreement eliminates suspensions for positive drug tests. Instead, the NFL will issue fines for up to three weeks’ pay.
So now players just need to stay clean for a few weeks, and they can light up the rest of the year, even DURING the season.
(Of course, it won’t be encouraged. The main point is that they won’t be tested and penalized for pot use.)
