Lil Nas X trolled his Twitter followers Wednesday for an April Fools’ Day tease about actually being straight – but it didn’t last long.

The 20-year-old rapper claimed that his coming out last year on the final day of Pride Month was part of an elaborate gag about his heterosexuality. “I was never gay. I said it to build up fuel for aprils fools day. Ha got u guys,” he tweeted in the wee hours.

Fellow rapper Ka5sh jokingly commended Lil Nas X by replying, “Coming out as straight is so brave.” Lil Nas X replied, “It’s hard but somebody has to take a stand and lead the other straight people afraid to be themselves.”

In a follow-up tweet, Lil Nas X asked his followers “where the hoes at” before concluding, “ok I’m gay again,” which prompted the reply “Welcome back” from out gay singer Troye Sivan.

Lil Nas X turns 21 on April 9th and has also been tweeting about celebrating his birthday in quarantine.
