It was June 15, 1994 that changed a lot of kids’ lives in the 90’s. Disney’s The Lion King was released in theaters to rave revues and a big office. The animated musical drama film grossed $776 million worldwide and was the highest grossing film of 1994. The Lion King also sold 30 million VHS tapes (remember those?), making it the best selling home video of all-time, at that time.
In 2016 the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. Disney would follow it up with a sequel and prequel, both direct to video released: The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride & The Lion King 1. There was also a CGI remake in 2019.
