HBO’s new documentary recounts the ill-fated Diamond Princess cruise during the earliest days of COVID-19 in 2020.
The ship had accounted for more than half of all accounted COVID-19 cases outside of China by February 26, 2020. More than 700 on board the ship were infected. The entire ship was quarantined with no one allowed to leave.
The story became a global spectacle, for all the wrong reasons. The crew tended to passengers while they slept and dined in cramped, shared spaces. Living conditions worsened over time and updates were shared from passengers via social media.
