Rental car companies have faces a shortage as people start to head for vacations this year. Last year due to the pandemic they sold off much of their fleets instead of letting them sit ideal on the lots.
Due to the shortage prices have skyrocketed. Some spring breakers were paying several hundred dollars a day and experts expected that to continue into the summer months. As a way to get around the shortage and price hikes vacationers are now riding in U-Hauls and other cargo vans. So they’re throwing their luggage in the back and rolling up to the beach in a van meant for moving (or a box truck).
These rentals are especially bad in Florida and Hawaii where they are being rented for a week a time. So that means people who are actually moving are having a tough time finding them too, creating a whole new problem.
