CWLP is looking for some fresh faces and talents in early May – mere weeks away.

City Water, Light and Power announced on Monday, April 21, that the City Water, Light and Power Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee was set to offer May 8 as a new exam date for those interested in starting a career as an Apprentice Electrician for the city utility.  The test qualifies as an entry of sorts to become an apprentice and to get on-the-job training and coursework for several careers; the next hiring period is planned to begin in June for Lineman, Substation, and Relay apprenticeships.

All applicants for the electrical apprentice position must take the National Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee’s – NJATC’s – Electrical Training Alliance online test prior to submitting an application for an electrical apprenticeship with CWLP; candidates can learn more about the test and use a prep guide available here, while all testing requirements and information can be found here. CWLP JATC offers testing sessions at CWLP’s facility located at 2730 Old Rochester Road in Springfield.

More can be found from CWLP on how to apply below:

Those with a prior passing test score of 6 or higher within the past 24 months from the final date to apply will not need to test again if proof is provided. Additionally, any current apprentice and/or journeyman level electrician who is in or has completed an accredited apprenticeship, which required a score of 6 or better on the Electrical Training Alliance test, and can provide supporting documentation, does not have to take this test to apply.

Those that need to test and want to apply, should sign up for testing by making request to: Jobs@CWLP.com  or by calling 217-789-2070 ext. 2080. Scheduling will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Testing will be limited to 12 candidates per session, and each session must be filled prior to another session opening. Candidates should arrive 15 minutes early to sign in and pay a $15 examination fee. Financial Hardship Waivers for the written exam will be granted to individuals who qualify under the WIC Income Eligibility Guidelines.

Applicants must: be 17 years of age or older; be a high school graduate or have a General Equivalency Diploma (GED); have unrestricted 20/20 eyesight (vision correctable to 20/20 accepted) with no color blindness; have valid driver’s license (at time of background investigation); and must be able to obtain an Illinois Commercial Driver’s License if required by the functional area. Full eligibility, exam and application requirements are available here: https://www.springfield.il.us/Departments/HumanResources/ElectricalApprentice.aspx.
