Civic, business and government leaders from Morgan and Sangamon counties joined Swift Current Energy officials on Wednesday afternoon in Auburn to cut a symbolic ribbon for what the company bills as the largest operating solar energy project east of the Mississippi River.
The Double Black Diamond Solar project is based in southern Sangamon and eastern Morgan counties.
The project already provides electricity to seven major customers.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson told the crowd in Auburn that Double Black Diamond is already serving the Windy City: (JOHNSON). Swift Current says about 1.6 million solar modules in the project can provide clean energy to the equivalent of 100-thousand homes.
