Construction of the Scheels Sports Park in southern Springfield is on track to open the large multi-purpose dome this October.
Project manager Chris Stritzel of Crawford, Murphy and Tilley said the dome will be the largest air-supported structure in the U.S. and the largest air-supported sports dome in the world.
The 190-thousand-square-foot structure will hold two softball fields and six basketball courts that can be converted into 12 volleyball courts.
Stritzel said the dome’s base is ready for crews to begin inflating the dome in about two weeks with completion in mid-June.
Construction is underway on the concession-restroom building and offices. Eight fields with artificial turf for baseball and soccer will surround the dome with expected completion next spring.
