After years of using privately-owned facilities in several locations, Sangamon County has officially opened a regional morgue to consolidate operations of the coroner’s office.
During a ribbon-cutting on Wednesday, Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said the facility provides the ability to serve families and counties across the region.
It includes autopsy suites, evidence processing areas and administrative offices.
The project is part of the renovation of the former State Journal-Register building on Ninth Street for county operations and was funded mostly through the federal American Rescue Plan Act.
