This Monday, we’re talking about mental health in a bit of a different way—when it comes to our pets. I think most of us would agree that the animals we bond with have their own ways of communicating how they feel. And when your pup is feeling nervous, you just know.
One thing that consistently scares our dog is thunder. So, here are a few things we do to help make sure our little guy is as comfortable as possible when the storms roll in:
🏡 Create a Cozy Space for Your Doggo
We set up a quiet, cozy area where Tank can retreat. We black out our bedroom and make a special corner just for him to relax. Familiar smells and favorite toys go a long way in helping him feel safe.
🎶 Use Calming Sounds
I pull up YouTube on my phone—there are tons of soundscapes made just for dogs! These usually help zone him out and keep him calm.
🐕 Try Anxiety Wraps or ThunderShirts
We don’t use these specifically, but I’ve heard great things. We do wrap Tank up in a blanket, which kind of mimics the effect. These snug-fitting garments apply gentle pressure, like swaddling a baby, and can be super soothing.
✨ Stay Calm and Pet On
We make sure to keep things chill. We speak in calm, soothing voices, avoid showing stress, and just keep petting. It really helps him feel reassured.
🌿 Consider Natural Calming Aids or Vet-Approved Medications
We’ve had success with CBD treats, which you can find at most pet stores. There are also a variety of other calming products—both over-the-counter and vet-prescribed—that might work for your pup.
I hope this helps you out! With all the thunder we’ve had lately, I figured I’d share what’s worked for us. Wishing you and your furry friends a peaceful, storm-free week. 💙
