Environmentalists are celebrating after the governor signed a bill protecting the source of drinking water for nearly 1 million Illinoisans. Capitol News Illinois reports the legislation bans carbon sequestration under the Mahomet Aquifer.
Proponents of the technology say it can help fight climate change, but environmentalists worry that carbon dioxide near sequestration wells could leak into drinking water.
The move comes after an ADM site in Decatur reported leaks at its own carbon sequestration well, less than 20 miles from the Mahomet Aquifer.
