Immigration action and federal troop deployments in Illinois is receiving closer scrutiny in the courts.
Capitol News Illinois reports a federal judge ruled immigration agents violated a court order when they made at least 22 warrantless arrests this year. He extended the consent decree and ordered Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to reissue rules requiring probable cause to agents nationwide.
A federal grand jury this week also in a rare move declined to indict two protestors charged with assaulting officers. And a judge released two protestors as they await trial for allegedly ramming federal agents’ cars.
An ICE agent shot one of those protestors during the incident. Journalists have also sued the federal government, alleging a pattern of — quote — “extreme brutality” aimed at silencing the press and protesters.
