Springfield to Add More Than Three Dozen EV Charging Stations Throughout the City

More than three dozen electric vehicle charging stations are planned for installation throughout Springfield according to the city’s electric utility. City Water Light and Power leadership told the Springfield City Council on Tuesday that the city received a grant of $629,000 from the Illinois Community Charging Program to build utility-owned charging stations for electric vehicles.

40 Level 2 charging ports will be placed across the city based on where they will be most likely to be of use, with 24 ports located in the downtown area alone. CWLP will charge a “competitive” rate per kilowatt for use of their EV chargers.

CWLP confirmed that they intend to seek additional grant money to build additional charging stations, with a focus on underserved areas of the community. Construction of this first round of chargers will be complete before the end of the current fiscal year – making Springfield the first city in Illinois to complete construction under the Community Charging Program.
