State Rep. Coffey and Others Talk SAFE-T Act Reform

Republican State Representatives Mike Coffey and Wayne Rosenthal have filed legislation to modify the SAFE-T Act to give judges more discretion to hold repeat offenders.

Coffey said all felonies should be detainable and all are not under the SAFE-T Act.

Coffey told reporters at the Illinois State Capitol on Tuesday that there are many incidents of people returning quickly to the streets after their arrests and committing more crimes.

Sangamon County Sheriff Paula Crouch said jail staff are often processing the same people several times.

Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser said the entire SAFE-T Act does not need to be scrapped, but judges must be allowed to consider each case.

Coffey said he hopes the Democratic super-majority in the General Assembly will allow Republicans to have input on tweaks to the law.
