The Springfield City Council is set to discuss renewing a contract with Flock Safety for automated license plate readers.
Flock Safety has increasingly come under scrutiny nationwide due to its facial recognition technology and data collection.
Springfield Police Chief Behl assured the alders during Tuesday night’s Committee of the Whole meeting that city officers use carefully crafted guidelines for the Flock cameras. Behl explained the cameras are facing the rear of passing traffic to prevent facial recognition, and that strict rules are in place for access to license plate data.
The Flock contract ordinance was sent to the City Council’s debate agenda
