The state’s first human case of West Nile virus of the year has been confirmed in a Piatt County resident.
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported three other probable cases of the virus in northern Illinois.
The department said about one in five people who contract the disease develop fever, headache, body aches, joint pain and other complications.
West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito.
The virus has been found in 50 Illinois counties this year. In 2025, West Nile virus was found in 73 Illinois counties with 150 human cases including 10 deaths.
