Sangamon County and state officials gathered on Tuesday to ceremonially break ground on the renovation of the Sangamon County Department of Public Health building.
The $16.2 million project is underway at the facility on South Grand Avenue on Springfield’s east side. Sangamon County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter said the renovation will bring many essential services under one roof without tax increases or additional debt.
The building will house public health services, community resources, employment services, Capital Township, veterans assistance and other programs.
County Public Health Director John Ridley said the renovated facility will improve access to services.
Project completion is expected in early 2028.
