Billy Eichner blames homophobia for the poor box office of his LGBTQ romantic comedy Bros.

The movie, produced by Judd Apatow, opened in fourth place with only $4.8 million. With a $22 million production budget, it will likely not be profitable.

The comedian, who wrote, produced and stars in Bros, took to Twitter on Sunday to give his thoughts on the matter. He tweeted, “Even with glowing reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore, etc., straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up for Bros. And that’s disappointing but it is what it is.”

He added, “Everyone who ISN’T a homophobic weirdo should go see BROS tonight! You will have a blast! And it *is* special and uniquely powerful to see this particular story on a big screen, esp for queer folks who don’t get this opportunity often. I love this movie so much. GO BROS!!!”

Billy also said a theater chain had tried to pull the trailer for Bros because of its “gay content,” but Universal persuaded them to keep it.

Bros is the first gay rom-com to be given a wide theatrical release by a major studio.
