On October 18, Tom Petty’s beloved 1982 album, Long After Dark, was reissued with a bonus disc filled with previously unheard television performances and studio takes that Petty considered including on the original record. Tom’s eldest daughter, Adria Petty, has taken the lead on working on archival projects like this, and she remains careful to honor her dad’s musical legacy while unearthing unreleased music from his extensive vaults. She works closely with faithful Petty producer/engineer Ryan Ulyate and two longtime Heartbreakers, guitarist Mike Campell and keyboardist Benmont Tench to make sure the new material reaches Petty’s previous standards. “The ultimate point of releasing anything at all is to elevate what’s already there and not ruin it,” Adria shared. “And to do a great service to dad and the Heartbreakers and what’s in their archive. Our job is to make sure we don’t leave him in a place where that work is undone.” (Variety)
