Zak Starkey took to Instagram on Monday (May 26) to reveal that during a recent phone call with Roger Daltrey, the legendary singer informed him that he was not “fired” but rather “retired” from The Who. “I had a great phone chat with Roger at the end of last week which truly confused both of us!!!,” Starkey wrote in the caption. “Rog said I hadn’t been ‘fired’…I had been ‘retired’ to work n my own projects.” Starkey, the 59-year-old son of the Beatles iconic drummer Ringo Starr, has been let go and re-hired multiple times by the Who over the last month, culminating in guitarist Pete Townshend officially announcing that Starkey is no longer with the band and their new drummer, Scott Devours, will be joining the Who for their upcoming The Song Is Over North American Farewell Tour. Despite that personal and professional chaos, Starkey writes that he and the band are, “on good terms and great friends as we have always been. Gotta love these guys.” (Billboard)
