A Springfield man has been charged with first-degree murder for a fatal shooting in downtown Springfield early Saturday.
Springfield Police arrested 29-year-old Christopher Coleman on Saturday evening in the 800 block of North Grand Avenue West on a charge not related to the shooting. Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser charged Coleman on Monday with first-degree murder for the shooting of 22-year-old Jayvon Bankhead of Springfield in the 400 block of East Washington Street before 1 a.m. Saturday.
Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said Bankhead died from a single gunshot wound. Coleman was convicted of murder in the 2014 fatal stabbing of James Goins on East Washington Street in Springfield.
Coleman was denied pre-trial release and remains in the Sangamon County Jail. His next court date is November 13.
