Springfield City Council Approves New Firefighters Contract

By Greg Halbleib Nov 5, 2025 | 5:19 AM

The Springfield City Council approved a new contract with the firefighters’ union on Tuesday night.

The contract includes a retroactive 5% increase in wages for 2025, and 5% increases each year through 2028.

Ward 2 Alderman Shawn Gregory expressed worry about the city’s ongoing moratorium on residency requirements for firefighters.

Mayor Misty Buscher said that the city heavily favors Springfield residency in hiring.

The new union agreement includes language requiring renegotiation if the council chooses to end the moratorium.
