IDOT to Hold Public Hearing on Dirksen Parkway and Sangamon Ave Intersection Today

By Greg Halbleib Nov 12, 2025 | 5:09 AM

Springfield’s most dangerous intersection is the subject of a public hearing today.

The Illinois Department of Transportation’s open house on proposed improvements to Dirksen Parkway and Sangamon Avenue is from 4 to 6 pm today at the nearby Northfield Center.

Exhibits and fact sheets will be available and IDOT staff and consultants will attend to answer questions. Proposed improvements include dual left turn lanes in all directions, dual right turn lanes for westbound Sangamon to northbound Dirksen, concrete medians, and bicycle and pedestrian improvements.

IDOT reports an average of more than 60 crashes annually occurred at the intersection from 2019 to 2023. Construction is anticipated to begin in the 2027-28 construction season with an estimated project cost of $24 million.
