Springfield City Council Approves Payment to Sangamon County Animal Control

By Greg Halbleib Jan 21, 2026 | 5:15 AM

The Springfield City Council approved a payment of more than $538,000 to Sangamon County Animal Control for the past year’s services.

Ward 3 Alderman Roy Williams Jr. was among council members who said the county’s service is substandard, highlighting a number of dog attack cases in his ward over the past year — one of which involved a child.

Nobody from County Animal Control appeared to speak with the Council about their work.

Negotiations on a new contract between the City and the County Health Board for animal control services remain ongoing.
