The December unemployment rate in the Springfield area was 5 percent, 1.2 percentage points higher than one year earlier according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
Springfield recorded 111,600 nonfarm payrolls in December, about 11-hundred fewer than December 2024 with the largest job losses in government, retail and professional and business services.
