Illinois Senate Republicans introduced a legislative package on Thursday designed to strengthen enforcement of protective orders for victims of domestic violence.
State Senator Steve McClure introduced a bill that would make violating a protective order a felony.
The proposal follows an Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence report that 137 domestic violence-related deaths occurred in 2024.
That total is 14 percent higher than the previous year and 140 percent higher than 2022.
