A Democratic candidate for Sangamon County sheriff is withdrawing from the race due to what he calls a lack of party support.
Marc Bell announced on Monday afternoon that his campaign was contingent on county Democratic leaders securing experienced management for his run, and Bell said the party was unwilling to do so.
Bell was the only Democrat in the race for sheriff.
He is a former Illinois State Police master sergeant and member of the Illinois Gaming Board and is currently the City of Springfield police community review commissioner.
Incumbent Paula Crouch and longtime sheriff’s deputy David Timm are the Republican candidates in the March 17 primary election.
Democrats are allowed to slate a candidate for the November election.
