“Michael” is a massive hit, but no biopic is completely accurate. And this one takes a lot of liberties with Michael Jackson’s life.
Here are seven of them:
1. The child molestation allegations. The movie WAS going to address the Jordan Chandler situation of the early ’90s . . . painting Michael as the innocent victim of a shakedown. That was supposedly cut for legal reasons.
2. Michael’s sexuality. We spent so much time pondering over it, while the movie spends NONE.
3. Where were Michael’s celebrity friends? The movie seems to suggest his only friends were his animals. But he socialized with plenty of stars, including Diana Ross, Brooke Shields, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Emmanuel Lewis, and more.
4. The Jehovah’s Witness thing. The family’s religion was a big part of why Michael felt he never had a childhood. It’s also why there’s a disclaimer on the “Thriller” video saying it doesn’t endorse the occult.
5. Michael didn’t almost die after his hair caught in fire. In reality, he was released from the hospital a day after that ill-fated Pepsi commercial. And he attended the Grammys a month later.
6. Where are the missing siblings? Brother Randy and sisters Janet and Rebbie were just excised from Michael’s life. In Janet’s case, she actually DECLINED to be part of the film. But why’d the other two get axed?
7. What about Paul? Michael and Paul McCartney had two #1 hits together, “The Girl Is Mine” and “Say Say Say”. But they famously had a falling out when Michael bought the Beatles music catalog out from under him.
Also, the “Say Say Say” video was filmed at what would eventually become the Neverland Ranch. Michael liked the place so much, he bought it and made it his home.
