A new scam has been going around Sangamon County, and it involves law enforcement.
In a post made to the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page they say they have received multiple reports involving callers falsely claiming to be associated with law enforcement or a federal agency.
Victims of this scam are being told they have an active warrant, are under a “gag order,” or face legal consequences unless they immediately provide payment.
The sheriff’s office described these calls as “fraudulent.” They said law enforcement will never demand payment over the phone or require payment to avoid arrest.
