A former emergency services worker has been sentenced to two years probation in connection with the death of a Springfield man in December 2022.
Peter Cadigan pleaded guilty in April to involuntary manslaughter. Judge Robin Schmidt also sentenced Cadigan to 180 days in jail but credited him with 295 days served earlier. He must also perform 100 hours of community service.
Cadigan and fellow emergency services worker Peggy Finley were originally charged with first-degree murder for the death of 35-year-old Earl Moore Jr. A coroner’s report said Moore died from asphyxiation when he was tightly strapped face down on a gurney.
Moore’s mother, Rose Washington, was among several who spoke during the five-hour-long hearing, saying she would never see her son overcome his struggles and build a better future for himself.
Cadigan addressed the court during Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, apologizing to Moore’s family and saying the incident will haunt him for the rest of his life. The next court date for Finley is August 24.
