On the debate agenda for next week’s Springfield City Council is a $1.1 million renewal of the city’s contract for the Shotspotter sound detection system.
Springfield Police have heavily praised the system for its ability to pinpoint potential gun violence, and to provide law enforcement with trackable data on criminal activity.
Ward 2 Alderman Shawn Gregory requested the contract be placed on debate in order to reaffirm the city’s commitment to crime reduction.
Gregory said he hopes to discuss the contract with Police Chief Joe Behl at next week’s meeting.
