The Springfield area unemployment rate for September was eight-tenths of a percentage point lower than one year earlier, although the number of jobs declined by about 1,400 from September 2025.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security reported jobless rates in September of 3.6 percent in Sangamon County and 4 percent in the city of Springfield.
The agencies reported 105,400 local nonfarm jobs in September, down from 106,800 one year earlier.
