As of last night, the U.S. and China were still neck and neck in the Olympics medal count. But the track-and-field events have started up, and we usually do very well there. We won 32 medals in track-and-field last time. China only won six.
Our first gold in those events came yesterday when Valarie Allman won the women’s discus. And we picked up some silvers as well: Kendra Harrison in the women’s 100-meter hurdles . . . Rai Benjamin in the men’s 400-meter hurdles . . . Brittney Reese in long jump.
We also snagged another gold in gymnastics when Jade Carey won the women’s floor. And earlier this morning, Simone Biles returned alongside Suni Lee in the balance beam final. (You can check those results here.)

1. USA: 66 . . . 22 gold, 27 silver, 17 bronze.
2. China: 66 . . . 31 gold, 19 silver, 16 bronze.
3. Russia: 50 . . . 12 gold, 21 silver, 17 bronze.
4. Great Britain: 39 . . . 13 gold, 13 silver, 13 bronze.
5. Japan: 34 . . . 18 gold, 6 silver, 10 bronze.
