In a recent survey out of Britain, 67% of people admitted that they’ve fake-laughed at jokes they don’t understand just to “fit in.” And 56% have even RE-TOLD a joke that they don’t understand. Which seems . . . unnecessary.
Another 56% said they’ve looked up the meaning of a joke that they didn’t get. (Later on, I assume. It’s not like they’re whipping out their phone in the moment to figure out the reference.)
The study also identified specific “jokes” that tended to confuse people, and these two tripped up almost half the people in the study: One is . . . “How do you drown a Hipster? In the mainstream.” And the other is . . . “Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.”
