Hip-hop legends RZA and DJ Premier battled it out on Instagram Live on Saturday night (April 11th), bringing in 90,000 people in two minutes! The two began by telling viewers how they met each other in 1990. Premo's first song was Jay-Z's “A Million And One Questions” and RZA played GZA's “Liquid Swords.” In the next round, Premier played M.O.P.'s “Breakin' the Rules” and RZA played Method Man's “Bring the Pain.” During round three, Premier played Mos Def's “Mathematics” and RZA played, Cappadonna's “Maria.”
As the competition heated up, Premier played classics like played D'Angelo's “Devil's Pie,” Jay-Z's “D'Evils,” Nas' “Nas Is Like” and “NY State of Mind,” The Notorious B.I.G.'s “Unbelievable,” “Ten Crack Commandments” and “Kick in the Door,” Gangstarr's “Mass Appeal” and more.
And RZA played cuts like Wu-Tang's “Shame on a N***a, “Protect Ya Neck,” “C.R.E.A.M.,” “Triumph,” Method Man's “Wu-Tang Clan,” Raekwon's “Ice Cream,” ODB's “Brooklyn Zoo” and “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” Raekwon's “Incarcerated Scarfaces,” Kanye's “Dark Fantasy” and Method Man and Mary J. Blige's “You're All I Need.”
RZA also played a snippet of a new Joey Badass song.
In an interview with Complex, RZA explained how the battle came to be, saying, “Swizz reached out. This is something we’re doing for culture. People could take it as a fight, a battle, whatever they want, but it's more about us celebrating the culture of hip-hop. I'm a big fan of DJ Premier.”
According to Billboard, DJ Premier was declared the winner but most fans agree that the winner of the battle was hip-hop!
