Selena Gomez appeared to cringe and stop applauding when Chris Brown was announced as a nominee for Best R&B on Sunday at at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, and the photo quickly went viral on social media. Although many users praised her for being one of the few celebs refusing to normalize Brown, who famously assaulted Rihanna in 2009, Gomez didn't like the attention. “I will never be a meme again,” she wrote later in her Instagram Stories. “I'd rather sit still than be dragged for being myself. Much love.” In another reaction to a post implying she was reacting to Brown's nomination, she commented, “Who cares lol.” Gomez was actually memed several times during the show, so it's not clear which she's referring to. Brown ultimately didn't win the award anyway. It went to SZA for “Shirt.”
