The Office of the State Fire Marshal says fire safety comes first this holiday season.
The National Fire Protection Association reports more than one-third of home decoration fires are started by candles, and more than two of every five home decoration fires are because the decorations were placed too close to a heat source.
The state fire marshal’s office urges residents to keep lit candles at least 12 inches away from decorations or anything that can catch fire, and to extinguish candles and turn off light strings before going to bed or leaving the house.
