A tourism initiative is proposed with a focus on Springfield’s Black history.
The Springfield City Council Committee of the Whole on Tuesday received a presentation on the “History Beyond the Tracks” heritage tourism initiative, which project developer Manny Nicholson said seeks to preserve and publicize Black history in Springfield with an emphasis on history east of 11th Street.
No budget has been submitted yet for the project as it remains in development.
A number of major sites have been identified to serve as key tourism destinations.
The City has already committed $1.3 million to the initiative.
