A social studies teacher at Southeast High School has been named this year’s Horace Mann District 186 Educator of the Year.
Matt Maton learned about the award in a surprise presentation at the school on Monday afternoon.
Maton has taught for 31 years including 26 in District 186.
He says he tries to make current events important to his students. Maton believes he was meant to teach.
One of Maton’s sons is following in his footsteps as a first-year biology teacher.
Maton receives $1,400 and an award from Horace Mann.
Rising Star Awards to teachers with no more than four years experience went to Nicole Pedigo of Franklin Middle School, Abbie Antonacci of Dubois Elementary, Richard King of Matheny-Withrow, Frankie Kulavic of Southeast High and Nichole Alwaz of Washington Middle School.
Springfield High School Principal Dr. Lisa Leardi was named Administrator of the Year.
