Springfield City Council’s Committee of the Whole on Tuesday night considered the elimination of a special electrical rate provision for high load customers.
The city had approved steeply discounted electrical rates in 2018 as part of an effort to attract potential data centers and other IT industries to Springfield.
City Water, Light and Power Chief Utility Engineer Scott Rogers said city power production has since narrowed significantly, while the types of data centers being constructed have grown exponentially more power-intensive.
If the council approves the elimination of the rate, then CWLP would instead individually negotiate rates for potential large load customers
