The Illinois State Board of Education is moving forward with a statewide plan that aims to improve how math is taught in schools.
Capitol News Illinois reports the goal is to provide teachers with evidence-based instructional strategies to help students build their numeracy skills.
The plan includes resources for teachers and school districts to use, but it doesn’t create any curriculum mandates or specific teaching requirements.
ISBE Board Member Laura Gonzalez says it’s important to have different strategies for each type of learner.
ISBE approved the plan during their board meeting on Wednesday. Their next step will be getting schools to use the plan.
