The National Weather Service reports Wednesday night’s storm system produced three F-1 tornadoes in Sangamon County.
The first tornado began northeast of Tallula and was on the ground for nearly five miles, damaging trees, a grain bin and shingles from a home.
The next storm was a short distance away west of Athens on the ground for 2 ½ miles with tree damage.
The longest tornado began about three miles west of Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport with a track of 24 miles, lofting 6,000-pound hangars, rolling an enclosed trailer and significantly damaging the Animal Protective League facilities on Taintor Road, then damaging trees and buildings around Camp Butler and through Mechanicsburg before ending five miles east of Mechanicsburg north of the Sangamon River.
