The Springfield Police Department reported today that a 47-year-old male was killed as a result of a early-morning brawl in the 800 area of Stevenson Drive.

At 2:03 AM on Saturday, March 8, police arrived at the scene of a fight which had been called in to 911; dispatchers reported hearing gunfire erupt over the phone when the initial call was made. By the time that SPD officers arrived at the scene, emergency medical services and the Springfield Fire Department were present and treating a male gunshot victim, age 47.

The man was transferred to HSHS St. John’s Hospital for treatment, but did not survive. Shortly thereafter, SPD crime scene personnel and detectives arrived at the site of the incident and began to process evidence and witness testimony.

The name of the victim is not yet public at this time. A few hours after the shooting, the SPD Emergency Response Team served a search warrant in the 1500 block of North Grand Avenue in relation to the Stevenson Dr. fight — two individuals therein were taken for questioning.

The SPD asks that anyone with information about the shooting call their offices at (217)-788-8311, as well as the Sangamon & Menard County Crime Stoppers line at (217)-788-8427.
