A hit-and-run late on Saturday night left a 35-year-old woman from New Berlin dead on the side of Interstate 72.
Illinois State Police confirmed that at 11:13 PM on Saturday, March 22, they reported to the site of a collision between a pedestrian and a motor vehicle just east of Exit 82 into New Berlin. The victim had apparently been walking eastward along the road when she was struck; first responders declared her deceased at the scene.
Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon issued a statement on Sunday that his office had identified the victim, and that an autopsy is scheduled for Monday the 24th. As is policy for the coroner’s office, the name of the deceased is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
Traffic through the eastbound lanes of I-72 was halted for several hours following the incident. Law enforcement continues to investigate: anyone with information relating to the hit-and-run is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers of Sangamon and Menard Counties at (217)-788-8427.
