Springfield Garden Club meeting set for May 5

The Springfield Civic Garden Club will hold its next monthly meeting on Monday, May 5, 2025, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 533 South Walnut, in Springfield. Guests are always welcome to attend.

The meeting will begin at 9:30 AM. Doors will open at 9:00 AM for refreshments and socializing.

The meeting will feature a guest presentation by Divernon native Dr. Phil Nixon, a retired Extension Entomologist with the University of Illinois for 37 years. His program, “Pollinators and Planning their Garden,” will focus on common insect pollinators like butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, bees, and wasps. He will also discuss insect predators and much more.

Dr. Nixon is experienced in pesticide applicator training and integrated pest management for landscapes and households. He holds degrees in Biology and Zoology from Lincoln Land Community College, a bachelor’s degree in Entomology and Invertebrate Zoology from Southern Illinois University, and a doctorate degree in Entomology from Kansas State University.

In addition, Nixon maintains flower, vegetable, and water gardens as well as a collection of bonsai. He is an insect photographer and a frequent expert on the Mid-American Gardener show on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s public broadcasting station, WILL-TV.
