Springfield City Council Approves Registry of Properties Cited for Code Violations

The Springfield City Council on Tuesday approved an ordinance which creates a citywide registry of properties cited for code violations.

Mayor Misty Buscher clarified that the new ordinance does not create a landlord registry but rather targets all real estate throughout the city.

The proposal was designed to preempt legislation in the state General Assembly’s veto session which would block cities from creating and enforcing nuisance ordinances.

An amendment to the ordinance created an enhanced structure of fines for property owners with three or more properties.
